Publication on David Neel:
Neel, David, The way home,
Vancouver ; Toronto : On Point Press, [2019],
xx, 178 pages : illustrations (some color) ; 26 cm, ISBN:
9780774890410, 077489041X;
"David Neel was an infant when his father, a Kwakwaka'wakw artist,
died, triggering events that would separate him from the traditions of
his homeland. When the aspiring photographer saw a mask carved by
an ancestor in a Texas museum twenty-five years later, the encounter
inspired him to return home and follow in his father's footsteps. Drawing
on memory, legend, and his own art, Neel recounts his struggle to reconnect
with his culture and become an accomplished Kwakwaka'wakw artist.
His memoir is a testament to the strength of the human spirit to overcome
great obstacles and to the power and endurance of Indigenous culture and art."

[Biographical notes on Robert Nelson]
Nelson arrived in Winnipeg in 1954 a recent graduate of the Art
Institute of Chicago. At the age of 28, he was the youngest faculty
member at the University of Manitoba’s School of Art. In the
catalogue for the exhibition, Art in Winnipeg 1955 to 1959, Ann
Cameron wrote that Nelson was an iconoclast who was willing to
shock the public with his experimentalism and jazz roots. He built
a closeness to his students, who included Ivan Eyre, Herbie McPherson,
Winston Leathers, Barrie Nelson, Bruce Head, Don Reichert and
McLeary Drope, amongst others, which was facilitated by their
proximity in age and by dint of Nelson’s generosity with his time,
knowledge, and resources.

While a philosophy undergraduate at the U of T, he was
the cartoonist for "The Varsity", the daily university newspaper.
Upon graduation, he was commissioned to paint an extensive
mural of university life for Hart House. This led to a scholarship
to study in England. He then taught art for a year in England,
where he fell in love with the profession. Back to Canada and
after trying careers as a graphic artist for TV, newspapers and
curating in Toronto art galleries, he went back to what he
loved, teaching and coaching kids. He taught art for 10 years
in Fort Frances and then PSS in Penetang until retirement.
He devoted his spare time to helping run Galerie Gale's Art
Gallery in Midland, opened to promote art and artists in the
area. He also helped with B&B at Galerie Gale with his love of
gourmet cooking and quiet charm.

ran aground on dangerous rocks. She was filled with passengers,
but miraculously not a single life was lost.

"La pesche des sauvages" from Codex canadensis, Louis Nicolas, ca. 1700. This illustration[Image and text reproduced from the following book: Peter Gossage, 1956-, and J.I. Little, An Illustrated History of
of Natives fishing (with the bowman playing a flute to please the Spirit) is one of the 180
drawings from the Codex canadensis, a manuscript that describes the First Nations, plants,
mammals, birds, and fish of Canada. It was produced by the independent-minded Jesuit
missionary Louis Nicolas after he was dismissed from the order and returned to southern
France where his last years were spent in obscurity. One of the great treasures of Canadian
book culture, Codex canadensis became known to the wider public only in 1930 when a
French bookstore published a facsimile. Nicolas's illustrations of Amerindians are distinctive
for the attention he devotes to their tattoos, which serve to distance them from Europeans and
Christian influences. Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, OK.

Sketch of Camillien Houde created by artist and fellow internee Guido Nincheri while Houde was interned at Camp Petawawa. In 1940 Camillien Houde was serving his second of four terms as mayor of Montreal. When World War II broke out Houde campaigned heavily against conscription. On August 2, 1940 he publicly urged men in Quebec to ignore the National Registration Act. Three days after this public declaration Houde was arrested by the RCMP and charged with sedition. He was sent to the Petawawa Internment Camp and did not recieve a trial. He was then transferred to Camp Fredericton where he stayed until his release on August 18, 1944. Normandeau, Michel ("Michel Normandeau Peintre Plein Air"),
artiste-peintre

Notman, Charles Frederic, 1870-1955, photographe, son of William
Notman, 1826-1891 (Artistes
plasticiens par Comeau)
Charles (1870-1955), the youngest son of William Notman, was born in Montreal
in 1870. He was the only one of three sons to be placed in an apprenticeship outside
of Canada. After finishing high school at age 18, Charles was sent to the Park Street
studio in Boston in 1888. The following summer, he worked as an assistant to his
brother William McFarlane Notman (1857-1913) who was then making his third
journey west along the Canadian Pacific Railway. Charles resumed his work in
Boston before returning to the Montreal studio on the death of his father in late-1891.
Named a junior partner by his brother William in 1894, Charles' talent and reputation
as a portrait photographer would flourish over the years, solidifying the status of the
Montreal Notman studio as a leader in its field.Between his appointment as partner in 1894 and the sale of the studio in 1935, Charles
would become the sole owner of the company (following his brother's death in 1913)
and pioneer numerous advances in the field of photography. This period, in and of itself,
merits a more detailed study. As his retirement neared, Charles likely found it hard to run a competitive business,
particularly in the midst of an economic crisis. The 1934 death of William Haggerty,
Charles' right-hand man, may also have influenced his decision to sell the company
and its collection of 400,000 prints and negatives - representing 78 years of photography -
to Associated Screen News. After the sale, Charles stayed on as the studio's director and
vice-president.

"Master carver Josiah Nuilaalik, the eldest son of artist
Jessie Oonark, lost his battle with cancer on May 19,
2005. Born in 1928 in the Back River area, Nuilaalik
was part of a large artistic family. In addition to his mother
and siblings, Nuilaalik's wife, Ruth Qaulluaryuk, was also
an artist, having produced several graphic artworks and
wall hangings throughout her career."

profond, 1996, serpentine, 45.7 x 17.8 x

"I really enjoy carving when I am not hunting. I have been carving for about 10
years. I did my first carving when I was a young boy, around eight years old. I
used to watch my father carve, but I didn't do a lot because of school and work.
I've always enjoyed seeing nudes carved from stone, and I have learned to
approach my work from the shapes that I see in the stone. I have carved Deep Kiss
from the shapes I saw in the stone, without thinking too much about how I
thought it should look. When I carve, I go along with the shape that is formed
as I chip away at the stone. (Taqialuk Nuna, 1996)"

(Taqialuk Nuna, 1996)"
