Alex Alikashuak, Unity / Unité, 1996,
fossilized walrus/os de morse fossilisé,
25.5 x 5.2 x 6.2 cm.
"This work symbolizes the unity of a traditional Inuk marriage between a man and
a woman.  The elders are always telling the younger generation that the traditional
marriages are much stronger than the marriages that occur in a church.  This is what I was
thinking about while making the sculpture.  (Alex Alikashuak, 1996)"

-----

(Alex Alikashuak, 1996)"

avec le morse, 1996, fossilized walrus skull, caribou

caribou, stéatite, 58.5 x 36.5 x 48 cm.

"A full-grown bull walrus is the most powerful creature in the Arctic.  Because
its vitality, its tunghat (spirit), when used by shaman, has the greatest strength to
battle other tunghats.  In his work, Jobie has captured the sense of power and
strength of a creature that would not even be challenged by a killer whale.  When
walrus meat is eaten by Inuit or their husky dogs, it gives them lasting strength
and endurance.  (July Papatsie, curator, 1996)"

------

(July Papatsie, conservateur, 1996)"
