Kamikpakittuq, Philip, 1955-, Northwest Territories Inuit (Indian and Inuit Art; Transitions -- Contemporary Canadian Indian
------ and Inuit Art 1997)

Philip Kamikpakittuq, Sun Rays, 1996, serpentine, caribou
antler, 33 x 26.7 x 20.4 cm.
The Inuit recognize that everything in creation is held
together by many spirits.  Philip's sculpture is a depiction
of the spirite of the sun's rays.  It is the sun's rays that
change the seasons here on earth, and they are guided
to us by many other spirits on their journey to earth.

Kenojuak, source is a video-still from National Film Board--
Documentary on Kenojuak (1963) (accessed 20 April 2022)

[on the 1963 NFB film]

In 1963 she was the subject of a National Film Board documentary
by producer John Feeney, Eskimo Artist: Kenojuak, about Kenojuak,
then 35, and her family, as well as traditional Inuit life on Baffin
Island. The film showed a stonecutter carving her design into a
relief block in stone, cutting away all the non-printing surfaces;
she would then apply ink to the carved stone, usually in two or
more colours, and carefully make 50 "shadow" prints for sale.[18]
With the money she earned from the film, Johnniebo was able
to purchase his own canoe and become an independent hunter
to help provide for the family, which now included a new daughter,
Aggeo, and an adopted son, Ashevak.[4]

Alan Kingsland, Home Bound, watercolour:

Alan Kingsland's contemporary watercolour
entitled Home Bound depicts the Emerald Bay
at the lighthouse in Oakville harbour.  A fish-
ing boat converted to salvage and general har-
bour duties, the vessel is a fixture of the
Oakville scene and a familiar sight as it plies
the waters of Oakville and Bronte harbours.

[About Lilia Kovalenko]

Graduated from the secondary art school of Tomsk
in Moscow, entered the Surikov Institute in Moscow,
studied in the portrait workshop with I. Glazunov.
Then when the USSR collapsed I left to Canada,
Ottawa and worked with art galleries, later worked
for many years in the Kievo Pechersk Lavra in the
icon-painting workshop. In this the moment I am
engaged in painting the temple of St. Sergius of
Radonezh in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, I received
a master of painting at the academy.

Photo of Krieghoff, Cornélius, 1815-1872,  Public Archives Canada C-7571.

Photo de Cornélius Krieghoff, vers 1862 (photographe: Jules Livernois, Musée McCord, Université
McGill)

Krieghoff, Cornélius, 1815-1872, autoportrait, 1855, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa /

(some col.); 21 cm.

Jean Soucy
Directeur du Musée du Québec" (p. 5 du catalogue Cornélius Krieghoff, 1815-1872, supra

Cover of Book by Marius Barbeau, 1883-1968, Cornelius Krieghoff, Toronto:
Ryerson, [1948], 36 p. : ill. ; 19 cm (series; Canadian Art Series).
"The French Canadians have a sense of fun that appealed to an artist, like him, of Dutch origin.
They were the stuff, kermesse-like, for a Breughel and a Teniers.  He enjoyed the company of the
habitants.  Mingling with them, he wandered off into the old parishes, where he heard amusing
yarns, and disappeared for days.  These were fuel for his humour and imagination, for instance
in the trick of BILLING THE PIKE OR CHEATING THE TOLL, at the gate out of town.
[...]
Krieghoff was more than an aesthetic painter; he may also be considered a historian.  In the
light of his published Catalogue raisonné of about 500 numbers, plus over 200 items discovered
since, he fully deserves the caption one attached to his name by William Colgate: 'Cornelius
Krieghoff, Pictorial Historian" (Marius Barbeau, Cornelius Krieghoff, supra, at pp. 28 and 32-33)

and I could not resist adding this parody...yes folks it is good to have a sense of humour!

Kulp, John, potter, died in 1874.

John Kulp, born in Pennsylvania, immigrated
to Ontario and was operating a pottery at Grimsby,
in the Niagara Peninsula, by the early 1840's.
Kulp's heaviest production was also containers,
to suit the widest market, but he is also known
to have made a number of toys and miniatures,
and a handsome redware inscribed jar.  Kulp
died in 1874; his pottery is not known to have
operated after.  The Kulp Pottery was excavated
in 1965.

"The earliest established dated piece of Ontario
pottery, a 2 gallon dark redware jar glazed with the
typical Germanic copper-green and iron-red mottling.
The jar is incised on the base "JOHN KULP/GRIMSBY
19th/1843."   Height 14".

1959 Photo of Kurelek, William, 1927-1977.

"William Kurelek
People painter depicted Canadian life, religious themes
...
Born near Whitford, north of Edmonton, Kurelek spent most of his boyhood on the family farm in Manitoba.
He hated the life and grew up with an increasing sense of alienation at home and at school, and decided in his
last year at the University of Manitoba to devote his life to the one talent that brought admiration: his ability
to draw.

It was after reading Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man at university that Kurelek decided to find
out if he, too, could become an artist.  He tested himself in characteristic fashion, by creating a self-portrait that
involved 16 hours of frantic, non-stop painting.

As the work neared completion, Kurelek recalled years later, he realized 'the painting had taken over and was
directing me.  I was an artist.  I knew I was an artist.'

But Kurelek faced a tortured journey before anyone else accepted him as an artist.  He travelled to Toronto in
search of an art teacher but left the Ontario College of Art after only a few months and began hitchhiking to
Mexico.  The artist had been plagued as a young boy by a series of frightening visions and hallucinations, all dealing
with pain, suffering, cruelty.  While resting under a bridge in Arizona he underwent a vision of a different kind.  It
was a white-robed figure calling him to be a shepherd.  That figure is the someone of Kurelek's autobiography, Someone
With Me, published in 1974.

Kurelek failed to find an art teacher in Mexico.  He returned to Canada and worked as a lumberjack to earn the
money for passage to England.  But his sense of 'depersonalization, of non-existence' had grown intolerable and he
turned himself over to the psychiatric hospital at Maudsley.  It was here and in other hospitals that Kurelek finally
found himself as a painter.  Later, he credited electric shock treatment and his conversion to Catholicism for his
reclamation.  .... "
James Purdie, Toronto Globe and Mail?, circa 5 November 1977.
